Surely there's more round cowled airplanes out there :-).....
I just got the front stay wires installed, and the cowl is ready for final fairing before I paint it....then I need to start figuring out how I'm gonna do all the slots in the gun heat shields, and start on them...technically I'm pretty much ready to cover, but I am stalling because I want to do as much of the little details as I can before I start cutting fabric..... can't really fly much till spring anyway, and making parts is a lot more fun than watching TV...I can't cover when the shop is getting dust everywhere from making little parts.and the more I force myself to wait till I cover, the more details I seem to come up with to do...I am considering making an Oberursel motor to hang in the cowl. I can't see having the electric motor and all that stuff visible from the front.....also found a 40 watt sound module which has a very convincing rotary motor sound.....so If I can after I finish the pilot, who is going to turn with the rudder and ailerons, I may just install it...total weight of the module and speakers is about 8 ounces....
Boy I need counselling or something, this model is starting to get away from me with all the little doo dads :-)

OOPs, I was sleeply when I was looking through my planes. I showed the wrong picture. I have both the Dufaux C2 and the Spad S.A.2 and neither one is a twin.

Hi, my name's Chris, and I'm addicted to flying bi-planes, even where I shouldn't.

My beloved Gipsy Moth came to a comfortable rest. In my neighbors tree. About 50 or so feet high.

I'm just so distraught, loved that plane so much. I could use a group hug.

Hopefully the wind will pick up, or it will snow, and it will find itself on the ground again.

And you didn't call the fire department?? oh ......no.... that's for cats isn't it....... Maybe you could get a fishing line with a small weight on the end and try to throw it over the model, and give it a gentle tug....I have actually seen this work....you have to rescue that poor little guy....he's gonna get really cold and miserable out there..........not to mention the fact that you will miss him, and you will be miserable....what a horrible way for a poor little airplane to go....frozen to death in the neighbour's back yard ( snif)

Maybe it will wander back down, like a Gispy should.

Ron is right....you must try a fishing line. I dropped a vintage freeflight in a tree one time..probably as high as yours, went and snipped off the barbs on a tri-hook and with a round shot weight...casted it up probably 20 times..and snagged her. No way was I going to leave her in the tree. Ever seen what a BUZZARD does to them??:eek: its horrible...nothing left but your pushrods. Shes hanging on my ceiling to this day. GOTTA GO FOR IT!!

I don't know if I'm posting this query in the right spot, but I'm hoping for some help! I'm VERY new to RC, trying to learn some basics from an FMS simulator. Until I gain some profeciency, I need some airplanes that are real floaters. I love old WW1 airplanes, and have some in the program, but I'm trying to find a model of my favorite, the Morane Saulnier Type "L" parasol. I had one before I upgraded to Vista, when I lost the use of my FMS for quite awhile, until I found a fix. But now, I can't find the "airplanes" I had collected, and can't find a Morane at all! Can anyone help me?????

Hi Chris, I feel your pain. I had my Sopwith Tripe stay in a tree 3 or 4 months till a strong wind ripped the foam apart and blew the pieces out of the tree. I found it scattered over a large area with the largest piece setting between rails of the railroad track. About 15 min after I picked everything up a train went through. Just look at the peices as a chance to use a different paint scheme on rebuild. My cousin told me he shoots the limbs off that are holding the plane with a 22 rifle. Course we live in low pop area.

KCLOSE helped feed my bad habit by sending me a "junk" foam Nieuport 28. Asked me to post pictures of the plane. Here is as received and some of my progress. It will receive another coat of blue. It is a US squadron 213 plane. The wings will be yellow. I could not tell in the picture what color the elevator should be so I will be making them yellow too.

Moth is safe and sound!
 

Success! What an epic day.

Last night, went out, bought a new wrist rocket, 30# mono filament, and some lead sinkers.

Ok, so our story starts this morning about 9 am.
Fire the sinkers (wrapped in duct tape). Goes over a branch, but it's not heavy enough to come down the other side. Keep trying, no luck. Attach some large nuts (the metal kind for bolts), and wrap again in tape. Now we've got a whole other issue. The "load" does not want to exit the slingshot properly, about 90% of the time I'm trying to shoot it. Load keeps getting slammed against the arm of the slingshot, and drops about 10feet in front of me.http://static.rcgroups.com/forums/im...milies/mad.gif

Finally get it near the right branch, and attach a nylon cord to one end, and pull it up over the limb. Start shaking the limb, plane comes tumbling down, and of course, gets stuck on another branch. It's closer, but still WAY the hell up there. (My estimate is it started about 70-80 feet up.) Now it's about 50 feet up.

Dad comes over, and can't help but get hooked on the challenge. Takes a couple shots, but his luck is as bad as mine. It's just about impossible to get a good shot over the branches. (We both have used a wrist rocket MANY times, and never had an issue, but today we're looking like fools.)

Finally get near the plane again, and as I'm tugging on the line, I hear this nasty sound of what seems to be cutting styrofoam, and the plane is wiggling. Get it to drop down again, finally, and this time it's about 35 feet up.

Now it's time for the ladder. This is just such a thick tree, we just can't get a good shot off. We drag the neighbors ladder out, and extend it all the way up the trunk. It goes about 28 feet or so high. So up I go, with about 20 feet of bamboo poles taped together. Finally hook the Tiggy by the cabanes, and after feeding it and the poles down, it's in my hand again!http://static.rcgroups.com/forums/im...es/biggrin.gif

It only took me until about 3:00 (yes, about 6 hours).

SO, the Moth is safe and sound, and with a bit of CA will be as good as new. Of course the Lipo is shot, it was at about 3volts. It's now had a death by stabbing and drowning in salt water.

glad to hear you have your moth back......... hope it isn't gonna be put in mothballs :-)...gotta fly her again.

well..............news flash......I have the cowl for the DR1 finished, and the wheels too.........wms bros wheels weigh 21 ounces each...mine weigh 11 ounces the pair. did the steps under the fuselage, and also the tie down loops...now it's pilot and guns time....there also appears to be some sort of step on the side of the fuselage in my photo's anyone know was the step on one side only or both ?? was it recessed into the fuselage? or on the surface??
I am ready to cover now.....film at 11. gotta charge the camera :-)

Been around, just keeping a low profile. I've been putting the details on my N-17 and planning for future projects. UPS said my new Electriflite Nieuport 11 will be here today.
We had our Dawn Patrol Christmas dinner last Saturday. Talk among the guys is half scale. 3 are building 1/2 scale DR1 tripes. So we may see some big stuff next summer.

I'm aiming for 12 1/2 pounds... last weigh in was 7 pounds 12 ounces...I have since put on the cowl. guns should weigh about 2 ounces, the motor and propellor weigh 32 ounces..battery weighs 19 ounces..cowl weighs 9 ounces.....so that leaves me at 10 pounds 14 ounces..which leaves 1 pound 8 ounces for covering.... 4 meters of world tex....might be a couple ounces over.....I am considering adding a sound system which is another 12 ounces, so I may be about 12 ounces over which will be 13 1/4 pounds, but with about 2800 sq. inches of wing it won't be critical...my last one weighed in at 10 1/2 pounds, but it didn't have as much detail, the axle wing was too weak for my liking, and the top sheeting was all 1/16 balsa...light but just a little too frail, so I did the top sheeting of 3/32 this time and left all other sheeting at 1/16. last model used 3/32" wire for landing gear, and no fairing..also had no wire in the cabane struts...this time i used 1/8 wire for the gear, and 3/16 for the axle, and added 1/8 wire through the center of the cabanes....a little heavier, but I wanted a little more strength in this area. I'm hoping I made up for the weight penalty by using my own home made wheels which weigh 11 ounces the pair instead of 42 ounces for the commercially made ones I used last time. next weigh in will be after covering, and motor in.

Hi Steve, it's a GWS foam plane - the Pico Tiger Moth. I made the cowl to look like a Gypsy Moth, and lowered the motor so the shaft comes out lower. (Real Tiger Moth had it's engine upside down, so it's prop shaft comes out real high.)

Steve, ONE HALF SCALE? That's incredible. Really starts approaching the thought of "hmm, perhaps next one will be real".

boy half scale !! imagine trying to transport that puppy around?? a 1/3 scale one is a load for my pickup truck...getting it in under the door to the canopy is a trick...then the upper wing has to go in on an angle, because it's too long for the tail gate to close.

These guys are already flying a 44% tripe and a 1/2 scale Fokker D-VI..1/3 scale is trouble enough with transporting, handling and storage. I have a couple more 1/3 scale on the boards, but I am seriously considering limiting future projects to 1/4. I enjoy all sizes. I just received the Great Planes Electrifly Nieuport 11. It's a good lookin bird.

Perc, they are WE Technical plans (89"WS). Years ago I saw one of these planes built up. It was so big, you could put a Texican cat in it (HeHe). I might be persuaded to part with them if anybody you know is interested since it's unlikely I'll build it (too big, no place to fly it). Marty

I agree with Stickhead. I have the Spad VII in progress and it is a well thought out kit and if I can get it finished right, should be a good flyer as well. Like Stickhead says, they have all the covering, decals and are easy to work with.

Marty..........those could likely be "modified " to make a good electric model...what size do they need to be for you?? I can modify them for electric and scale them down for you if you like........I like a challenge now and then

Just cut 'em out of a piece of an old hockey stick Steve...put a couple brackets under the wing, and shazam :-) working on guns now...heat shields have all the slots cut in them, and I gotta figure out a way to wrap them around a 1 1/4" dowel without breaking them..wonder if windex has enough ammonia in it to do the job?

or surely there must be some sort of cleaner that's heavy in ammonia I have all the pieces pretty much drawn onto some wood, so I gotta spend a half hour with the coping saw to cut em out....should be done in a day or two...then it will be time to make the rotary motor...I'm gonna try to not cover till I have every conceivable extra done this time... but it's hard to not open the rolls of material...problem is once I open them, then it will be covered and I'll be kicking myself cause there was something else I was gonna put on it and didn't :-)
That 1/4 scale DR1 in brass and foam is gonna be a project and a half eh?? should fly fine though..likely it will be pretty light....I guess Marty is getting a little upset...every time this thing gets posted, there's another RED piece on it :-)
don't worry Marty...the guns probably won't be red :-) or the motor.....( maybe)

If you make the guns and motor rusty then they can look kind of red.
