Sopwith

Last year I had the receiver go bad in my scratch built Sopwith Tripe. After spending over a month high in a tree the wind finally got strong enough to break the plane free. I finished building my MS-N and started the rebuild on the Tripe. Here are some pictures of before the crash, after the crash, and now. I still have to install receiver and battery, shell chutes on the gun, and strip the prop to look like wood.

Ryan Flyer 06-11-2009 05:50 PM

Hi all, I am just starting out in Rc but I love the WW1 planes and I like to build. I be around.
Ryan
P.S. WW1 ace, I am sorry for your lose and please now that you will be in my prayers.

WWI Ace 06-11-2009 06:06 PM

Thanks Ryan and welcome!! There are some great guys on here that are also VERY knowledgable about WWI aviation. Feel free to ask questions if you need to. We will help you as much as we can. If you like to build there are some good kits at www.aerodromerc.com and www.manzanolaser.com you can look at. They are short kits so you will have to buy a little wood but all the hard to make parts are laser cut. I have kits from both of these and I can tell you that they are worth the money!!! The Aerodrome site also has great building tips and other info on their message board. Steve

The tripehound is finished and flys great. Sence it is a scratch build I am showing how I found the balance point. I used a frame square held flat against the bottom of the trailing wing and against the leading edge of the forward wing. It measures 7 1/2 inches to the trailing edge of the trailing wing from the leading edge of the forward wing. 7 1/2 divided by 4(25%) equalls 1 15/16. I made a blance tool using a coat hanger and 1/2 inch colored tape. 2 inches is between the yellow and blue tape. I put the blance tool under the top wing till just a bit of the yellow tape showed at the leading edge. I now have the ammo chutes installed. Battery installs under the motor through the open cowl front. Put a red heart on the tail fin and added more white on the fuselage top so it matched the shape of the red better. Prop is striped to look more like wood.

Degreen, how did you get the wings formed so nice? I end up melting them doing more than a simple curve.

I cheated, I bought a used GWS Tiger Moth and it came with 3 extra wings. Sence I had 3 wings I made the tripehound.

Pretty slick idea :$

Have you been using Palmalive? Hands look so soft - and that diamond ring - wow - fancy!! :D

I really like how you clipped the trailing edge of the wingtips, it's a great touch!

WWI Ace 06-19-2009 04:44 PM

Pure genius how you figured your CofG!!!!!!!Steve

Thank you, the frame square I used even has the measurement marked on the inside so it worked great. My Camel has the COG listed on the bottom wing. I used the square on it and got a direct read for the COG on the top wing. Then by using the balancing tool with the color tape I do not have to measure and mark the COG on the plane.

Don't need Palmalive. These hands only cost a small downpayment and income for the rest of my life.

I cut the wing tips to match the tripehound.

Happy Fathers Day all you WWI nuts!!!!! Steve

dbcisco 06-22-2009 02:47 AM

Thanks Steve. I thought it was Feathers Day. :) Happy rudders and elevators to all.

scalercflyer 06-22-2009 03:59 AM

HAppy Fathers Day

Yes Happy Fathers Day to all my WWI buds here at Wattflyer! :D I got a slightly used Spektrum DX6i for Fathers day. :D:) I finally broke into 2.4 G. :) Now it'll just cost me a fortune to convert all my other stuff  ....nah.. I'll still keep my 72 mhz stuff for now. :tc: Marty

WWI Ace 06-28-2009 04:20 AM

Okay Degreen finally got to me!! Today I started a Manzanolaser Nieuport 11 designed by Peter Rake. I was gonna do my 1/8 Aerodrome tripe but I need some good wood for the spars. I have all the wings and horizontal stab and elevator built up and the front of the cowl drying overnight. It's about a 36"ws plane. Hope to get the fuse and rudder done tomorrow. Gonna use small 4.3 gram servos in it to keep it light. Haven't decided on a color scheme yet. How 'bout some suggestions fellows? I don't have much reference material on this plane. Steve

dbcisco 06-28-2009 05:13 AM

Here's some Nieuport 11 shcemes:

Here's another interpretation of Navarre's red (debated) Nieuport.

WWI Ace 06-30-2009 12:06 AM

I've contacted Callies Graphics about some decals for the Nieuport. I just like the way she makes them. She does a great job and the prices are very fair. Steve

WWI Ace 06-30-2009 05:13 PM

She charged me $15 which included shipping for decals for the tops and bottoms of wings, side, and rudder. She makes them out of .002" thick vinyl and you can even clear coat over them if you want. She will do originals or resize anything she already does. Her website is www.callie-graphics.com if anybody wants to check her work out. Steve

7car7 07-06-2009 04:23 PM

Yesterday was my B'day, and I got a new WWI DVD - Hell's Angels. Produced by Howard Hughes. Can't wait to watch it, should be fun.

WWI Ace 07-06-2009 11:14 PM

Cool 7car7!!! I have my Nieuport 11 pretty much all framed up guys. Just gotta do some sanding and bend a couple more pieces of wire. Will post pics when I get it so I can mock it up "in the bones". I'm gonna use a Eflite 400 outrunner in it. Steve

7car7 07-07-2009 02:28 PM

I don't think I spotted a build thread on that Nieuport yet!

WWI Ace 07-07-2009 11:03 PM

I'm not good enough to do actual build threads and when I build I get so carried away that I wouldn't remember to take pics anyway!! You'll see pics of the "bones" shortly!! Steve

Full scale D VIII

I thought this crew might appreciate the video at this link:

I'd love to try that.:tc:
Brad.

Percyflyer 07-08-2009 01:41 AM

Thanks, very cool video!!

scalercflyer 07-08-2009 02:23 AM

DVIII video

Sweeeet video! :D Sounds like a rotary engine since he keeps blipping the throttle. I may just build my Ben Buckle DVIII kit this winter (Steve where are you?). :) Or I may scratch build one (I have many sets of plans with all different size wingspans up to 69"). How'd you like that thing sneaking up on your Camel's tail Don?:D Kinda puts the wind up your tail, Eh?:D:D Marty

scalercflyer 07-08-2009 02:25 AM

Percy's friends

Hey Boys! Why do I see only 1 friend listed for Percyflyer? That goes for all of us WWI nuts here! We're all WWI aviation Comrades and Friends! Let's get cracking and sign up! No excuses!:D:) Marty

I think you should send everyone the color pages from the Osprey series. Might give people some ideas.:D

My Dr.1 is going to be black with the "God of Wind" ala Jacobs. Gotta get the table back from the wife to work on it some more.:(

He flys just like I do, low and down the runway. I don't quite get his landings, not 3 point like mine(2 wheels and nose). LOL So many nice WW1 planes to model. The DVII will probably have to wait. I have the plans drawn for a Junkers D1.

I made his DVII. Here is the "God of Wind" if you need it.

Watch when they hand crank the engine before starting it, you can see the cylinders on the rotary engine turn.

WWI Ace 07-08-2009 04:36 AM

I got the decals for my 1/8th scale tripe from www.calliesgraphics.com and they came with all the wing crosses and everything!! If you go to her website you can see the Jacobs decals on a smaller tripe. I just had her enlarge them to my planes scale. Steve

Berg DI

Hey Guys, I have a nice set of plans for a BERG Di if anyone is interested. Marty

Ryan Flyer 07-08-2009 01:38 PM

Hay scalercflyer, I might be interested. By BERG Di do you mean a Dr1 made by BERG?
Thanks
Ryan
