My boy broke his arm skateboarding Flyingmonkey. Yeah it's dangerous but he's usually very good at it!! Just landed wrong. Thanks guys for all posts to him!! I've let him read them and he got "the giggles." He's already going crazy from being in the house too much!! He's wearing me out walking around the neighborhood with him after work. Yikes. I busted my wrist once when I was a kid. Just crushed the little wrist bones when I was climing off the (no pun intended...) monkey bars, and a kid grabbed my foot and pulled me off.

Okay guys, BROKEN ARM BOY tried to fly on my G3.5 sim. Not too good!!! Gonna have to wait maybe till he gets a half cast. But we did get him the Playstation Snoopy vs. Red Baron game and he can do that! So at least he gets to fly around in his Sopwith Camel searching for that elusive red triplane. Martin would love this game because he would get to DESTROY the red tripe!!! Ha ha!!! Steve.

Need to work on my plane but the little one needed entertaining and the middle one needed to be picked up from New Orleans trip. Took the little one to the Freedom Mueseum and they let him wander around in an old Coast Guard search and rescue heli. He liked that!! They have a B-25 and some old WW2 tracks and trucks. They let him crawl through the B-25 last time I took him. I try to take the little one to do something at least every other weekend. His brothers are big enough that they do their own thing now. That's why I want to get him really into RC flying. Then I can watch him progess along with spending time with him. I guess I oughta look for a second WWI looking plane in case he crashes the D7. He wants WWI stuff but I think he wouldn't mind something like a GWS Pico Stick F. They look close to WWI and are easy to fly!! Steve.

Come on guys,where are ya? I feel so all alone!!! Still waiting on the tiny servos for tripe. I decided not to put all those wings on and then try to put the servos and pushrods in the fuse. I'll get the fuse done and then deal with all the wings. With my clumsy paws I think there will be less chance of breakage!!! How are those Electrifly tripes comin'? Steve

Hey Flying Monkey! I just went to that Hodges Hobbies site and that B29 looks like the one I see in all my RC magazines!! If it's the same one it is one impressive airplane!!! Steve.

I don't know if it's always the same one, I have seen it enough in recent magazines to bet that it is the one you saw.

No matter what, it's very impressive.

I taught myself to fly with the GWS Pico Stick F. I found all the mods on the net that I could and added them to mine. I had to reinforce mine where the wings join together. I had bamboo skewers added to the wings. I looped the plane into the wind and the wings tore into at the joint. Even the plastic ripped into that reinforces the joint. I added a plywood V joining the bamboo skewers and no more problems. Mine has been in several trees, hit the ground straight in, hit a barb wire fence several times and it is still flying. I wore out 2 of the brush motors and now have a brushless motor salavaged from a PC tape drive.

Well Guys, I flew my Funny Park today for the first time. I expected the plane to fly slow, but it was twitchy and very sensitive to elevator and I had to keep the speed up. I suspect it has to do with the short coupled tail movement. Maybe I need to work on it some more. Any way, I have not hit on any plane I am really satisfied with yet. It may just be that I need to put the tripe (or something else WWI ) together. What do you think? I don't think we will be enjoying calm flying conditions for much longer up here in the Northeast so I need to get building. Maybe I will build 2 at the same time! Steve, how's Colt doing? I hope he's healing quickly. BTW, spending more quality time with Dad is not a bad thing. Sorry it had to be under such bad circumstances. Martin

Hi Martin.....My favorite plane is an electric Ultimate biplane......But I love my WW1 birds too.....I've been delayed on my tripe by putting together 4 other planes for other people!!........Hope to get back on the Dr1 very soon........

I put the e-Flite cessna up today.

I was worried I might be rusty, not having flown anything but the slow stick in a while.

There is one thing I determined about the Cessna. If I could fly that thing, I can fly anything.

I had one of the early Eflite Cessnas and hated it!! Mine was creased up before I even flew it and the wings struts kept coming unsnapped. I used to have a Pico F too. Gave it to my oldest boy and he eventually looped it enough that the wings folded and it slammed into the ground. It is a great slow flying trainer plane though!! Colt's fine!! He's spent alot of his in-the-house time helping Snoopy shoot down the Red Baron!!! Steve.

The wing struts came loose on mine too. Even pulled the snap out of the wing.

I was looking at that snoopy game. I meant to check the local shop to see if they were carrying it.

Colt is loving it!!! The planes look close to real planes for the most part. Camel, SE5A, Taube, Fokker tripe among others. It keeps him interested in flying and I like that! Steve.

OK guys, the little servos are in!!! Tomorrow I start trying to get at least the rudder and elevator hooked up. Steve.

Been a long while since I contributed here.

Lately I've been working on a Polk's Fokker Dr1. I have about an hour or so left in assembling it. May get to maiden it this weekend. It's powered by an Astro Cobalt 05 geared, 11x7 e-prop and an 8-cell nicad pack (yes, nicads, it needs the weight). We'll see how it does. May sound odd, but I've kind of lost interest in it and I haven't even flown it yet! I'm thinking of getting a Lanier Se5 to replace it and selling the Dr1.

I'll report on the maiden.

I am a little leary about trying to fly my DR1.

I hear constantly how twitchy it is.

Do you have the Dr1 in your G3.5 sim?

Flying your Ultimate will help prepare you......especially the 3-D rates when you get there!!

I have the foam DR1 in there. A very slow and gentle plane. I doubt it's much help.

I don't have any problems with the planes I do have access to on there.

Well, Mac's plane loses landing gear everytime I try to land it...


I learned on a 3D style plane. The GP Electrifly Fun Force 190.

It had obnoxious throws. It came with over sized servo control arms.

I learned to be VERY gentle with the controls.

I moved up to a Blue Funder. A very responsive plane.

But, this is balsa, hot glue is NOT my friend here...

Oh boy. I just finished the Fokker and weighed it. It's 3.1 lbs 49.6 oz. That sounds heavy to me. I had to use a Higgley's Heavy Hub (brass) to get it to balance between the 25mm and 30mm marks. Should be a very exciting first flight.

Cool...I can't wait to hear about it...came real close to buing that plane...they were on backorder too long and went another route.

Okay. Just came in from the maiden. Even at 49.6 oz it takes off very slowly. I had to make a crosswind takeoff because there were soccer goals on the field today. Fall soccer season approaches. Anyway, easy takeoff and slow climb to the right. At about 100' away and 20' alt it started glitching badly. I pointed the nose down a bit and eased back the power. Mains down and a perfect scale nose over! Second flight the same. I tried using a new GWS tx/rx that I've had but never used. The Astro is capacitored. Perhaps the esc? I'm not sure. The easiest fix is to swap in another rx so that I can use my trusty Futaba T6XAs. I'll put the GWS into a SS or something.

I can say that for the minute oor so of flight I detected no really bad habits. It lifts off so smoothly. I didn't have the nervousness usually associated with a maiden. Nice plane. I was considering selling it to make room for one of the Lanier Se5's but I don't know now.

I'm done for today. It is so durn humid out there.

I fly one of those Carrera and Flying Monkey!! My Polks DR1 Has a Eflite Power 25 outrunner on it with 550watts of power. It climbs very well and the only tricky part about flying is takeoffs and landings. Triplanes ground handling habits a not the same as a normal plane but once you get the hang of it your fine. Steve.

That's what I keep hearing.

Nothing about the DR1 is conventional.

All right boys we gotta get this thread goin' again!! I have installed all the servos, RX, and ESC. I have mounted the elevator on the little tripe and installed the pushrod (yes Martin I cheated here!!). I put on the rudder and rigged up the pull-pull using the Dubro Micro Pull-Pull system. The ailerons will be pull-pull also, remember. So all that's left is to mount the wings and landing gear, then cover the bottom after a check to make sure everything is working. I also drybrushed some dark gray over the Leaf Green and OD Green wash. It added a little more depth to the camo. Gotta get some way to get some pics to you guys!!! How are ya'lls projects comin, (I wrote ya'll ha ha!!)? Keep me informed!!! Steve.

Fokker EV/D VIII
 

In an effort to stir things up here's some photos of my old Ben Buckle Fokker EV/D VIII. Built it back in the late 1980's I think. Has only flown as a composite of sorts. I have flown the fuselage attached to a set of glider wings and the wings attached to a Slow Stick fuselage/stick. I flew it that way as the Fokker fuselage and gear was way too haevy for the original wings. I've put it ona diet and IIRC it's down to around 3 to 3 1/2 lbs now. I'm recovering the wings with a layer of 2mm Depron and will hard coat it with either brown craft paper and thinned white glue ala Chris Golds or in fiberglass and brushed on PU. I'll have to fly it first to see.

Anyone have any pics of the top surface of the Fokker EV/D VIII wing? I remember a few year back on the Aerodrome site that there was some controversy as to the paint. An expert claimed that the correct color should be a pattern of true green and mocha brown IIRC. To me, all of the photos that I have all look to be a streaky pattern. I'm thinking of going with a light solid coat of brown streakes with green. I'm not a scale stickler as you can tell from the black fuselage covering but I have to paint the wing anyway so I might as well get it right.

Well Boy's I've had it with foamies and flat airfoils (at least for today)! I flew my flat Extra today and it flew like a brick. Full throttle and it sorta flopped around the sky. I landed it and broke it in two again!! When I got it home I stripped it and will use the flight pack on something worth while. Then I flew my Funny Park. It was so windy I decided to land it and fly it another day and promptly tore the landing gear off, broke the rudder and damaged the aileron! I had 2 more planes to fly, so I tried my built up Extra 330 and couldn't get it off the ground! I just packed up and went home. Anyway I need to start another project so the tripe is on the boards. I'm also considering a simultaneous build with something else in the shop. Boy do I enjoy building with balsa. There is something to be said for built up balsa airplanes. In my humble opinion you are missing something if you don't build kits or scratch build. On second thought maybe I should go back to building plastic models. They don't crash........ Martin

Have you ever tried the KF airfoil for your foamies? When ever I build mine I used to use flat foil, now I only se the KF. Simple and effective airfoil, with great characteristics. I just maidened my Super Simple Fokker today with a KF on top and bot wings. Check out the link in my sig.

We all have those days Martin!! I've had plenty of days where everything went bad!! Used to be I NEVER went flying that I didn't break something. Foam flies all right but I agree that it isn't as good as balsa. Flat 3D planes usually have to be very overpowered to fly. So you're gonna start the tripe huh? Can't wait to see it!!! My little tripe won't be SCALE exactly but I think you'll like it. Can't get too crazy on a plane this small or my wingloading will get too high!! Well better go check on the curtain climbers (kids).
