Our hobby is great like that.....AMA dues for the 11 year old kid was $1....
Our club voted to have kids under 16 and spouses be members free....so the kid gets to be a member for $1 total....And spend quality time with his Dad!!!....His Dad has purchased a supercub for him, and a slow stick that I will be helping him assemble this evening....The Kids are our Hobbiy's future!!!!

So anyway....Where's Martin and that tripe!!!!:)

I know what you mean 50+. My 9yr. old is a skateboarder. When he goes to the skatepark either mom or I stay with him. I have a Sig foam Fokker D7 built that may become his first real plane. He flies alot on my G3.5 sim and likes to fly the triplanes the best. Like father like son I guess!! But he flies fairly well on there so we'll give it a try. Since I bought my DX6 I have a Hitec Laser 4 that he can use. If he crashes it so what!! It's just a plane and he's the important thing here. We can get another plane! Nice build Murph!! Steve

Guys, I have to put the tripe on temporarily on hold till I take care of some "honey dos" and maintenance around the house. ::o Seems like it never ends! :{ I'm undecided about stripping the tripe or just painting her. Murph's thread intrigues me. Anyway, it's been so stinking hot up here in NJ that I just want to stay indoors. No joy is obtained frying certain parts of my anatomy standing at the field getting a flight in. However, the weather is supposed to ease up this weekend so I may get some flying in. I have yet to maiden my Funny Park, perhaps I'll get a chance. Also want to try my Katana with a smaller prop and see if the motor runs cooler. BTW, I spoke to COX Hobbys today and was told that there was some mind blowing new products coming out shortly. All the arm twisting didn't get me any answers as to what he meant so I guess we'll have to wait awhile Boys. Murph your MC should ship out early next week. It's a complete unopened roll so I think they'll be enough to cover the Brisfit. Needless to say plan it out (I always do) so you get the most out of the roll. I'm not sure, but I think they stopped making it.???? Martin

My Best friend moved to Wayne(sp.?)New Jersey recently....He said he is dying from the weather....It's a far cry from 70 degree Fort Bragg, Ca.

i got a predicament here i bought a parkzone fw-190 cuse i thought it was cool but i read these forums and found out it wasnt for beginners and i have no more money left to buy a trainer so do u think that if i practice enough on fms would i be ready to fly it

Welcome to wattflyer Jack!!! There are lots of guys here with that plane...if you search for a thread about it and ask the guys there, they will help you get prepared for that particular plane.


Practice on that Simulator alot......in particular landing and the landing approaches......

Hey jack7 can you take it back for a refund? If not maybe you can trade it for a trainer. I really don't know much about FMS but from what I've heard it isn't really realistic. Or maybe while your practicing on FMS you can save the money to buy a trainer. Warbirds ARE NOT GOOD FOR BEGINNERS!!! Take it from someone who has spent, (looks to make sure girlfriend isn't looking) a couple thousand easy, trying to teach myself to fly.

Take the plane back. Get yourself a HobbyZone Supercub. Buy some extra props, and maybe another battery.

The cub is a nice plane, easy to fly, and looks scale in the air.

As you get more experience and money, you can buy a better radio system, and add ailerons to it. You can dress the plane up with paint or markers and have a good reliable plane, no matter how experienced you get.

And I though my Sopwith tripe was outlandish with the red, white, and blue wings.

Best thing I found for learning was a hay field with tall hay. Just wish there hadn't been any trees anywhere close or fence. Don't know how many times I hit that fence with my GWS Slow Stick F and I think I had to get it out of every tree close to the field. Slow Stick F is a tuff plane and easy to fix. I broke the wings into once and the fuselage twice. Before I tried flying it I added all the mods I could find on the net. Bamboo skewers and shipping tape on wings. I learned to fly on the little geared motor. I wore out 2 of the motors. I now have a unmodified brushless motor salavaged from PC tape drive. Flyes much better. I think I put this plane in the air for around $75.

speaking of money spent...

I ended up with a GP DR1 yesterday. The shop owner put it together (wrong) put it in the air once, and didn't like it.

I picked the whole thing up, minus the radio (he's bringing in the charger to give me next week.) for under 130 bucks.

I took apart the wings, took out the glow sized reciever (it will fit nicely in my 40 cub when I make it electric) and put everything where it belonged.

I might just have to put it up a couple times this weekend.

If I can bring it home in one piece, I will do some of the scale mods to it. It's really a nice little piece of history, my first WWI bird.

Another one for my Camel to shot down. Make it red so it is easy for the Camel pilot to see. HAHA

oh, and to stay on topic,

yup, need to work on my tripe as well. I broke one of the monts for the lower wing strut being stupid last night while handling it.

So much of it needs reworking. The guy who built it, is definately not an electrician!

Took a break from sanding the cowl. Hard to get alot done on it while my 9yr. old sits beside me building a 1/72nd Albatros DVa. Oh well it's time spent together!! He is just learning to build models so he needs help frequently. At least he's interested in planes!! His older brothers could care less most of the time. Anyway made a decision guys. The rudder and the ailerons are supposed to be coupled together on the same servo. Interesting, but tough to do with fat fingers in a little fuselage!! I ordered 3 new 4.3gram servos from www.unitedhobbies.com so the rudder and ailerons each have their own servo. I know it'll weigh a little more but it will also allow more room to get things adjusted correctly. The ailerons are definitly pull pull and the rudder will probably be also. The elevator will probably end up with a pushrod: 1. 'cause I'd have to build another IDENTICAL control horn and: 2. it will be easier to run one small wire through the tiny fuselage without taking a chance of poking holes where I don't want them!! Anyway United Hobbies is selling the servos for $3.45 a piece!! They are selling some 9gram servos for $2.99 each if you guys need some servos for a project. I've had very good luck with their products so far and if there is a problem, just notify them and they'll give you a number for a US (or Canada) Rep to deal with your claim. They have outrunner motors and ESCs dirt cheap!!! Steve.

Murph's right!! My camera is dead!! They just don't build 'em tough enough to survive two teenage boys. Sorry there are no pics. Maybe by the time it's finished I'll have pics of her. I get this one done I'll either start the little Eindecker or the 35"ws Fokker tripe. More than likely the tripe since I've already bought machine gun kits and custom decals for it. Well Boys, one of my best friends gave me this jet. I may temporarlly sideline some building and put it together. Seems like I need a jet to turn and burn. Back on the DRI shortly. BTW, this is an Ultrafly plane. Check out this site for more info. Martin

Just think what it would be like to have a couple of engines like a ME 262 under the wings of a Fokker tripe!!! They were Jumo engines I think. Do you think the tripe would have enough structural integrity to fly or would it instantly turn into a flying bonfire? Steve.

Okay guys, bad day here!! My 9yr. old that was going to probably fly his first WWI plane this weekend has broken his arm!! He has a compound fracture. Yep, both wrist bones were poking out of the skin!! He's okay. He is just one of those kids that always has to be doing something. Now he's down for 6-8 weeks!!! He ain't liking it!!! Oh well, the plane will be waiting on him when he's well. Steve.

Man Steve!! Seems like the Devil is working overtime at the Collins' house!!! A compound fracture!!! Man does that smart! My youngest boy did the same thing when he was your boy's age. Only he needed to punch the concrete at that time for some reason (I still haven't figured it out!). Hope the youngin' heals quick! How's Mom handling it? Anyway, I started putting the controls into the SU-27 tonight. I'm concerned about the motor not being right on the thrust line. I'm not using the recommended gearbox. I'm using my brushless bell type with a direct drive using a 7X5 prop. As soon as I get the camera, I'll shoot you Guys some pics. Any and all criticism and opinions are welcome as always. Also seems like I'm running low on RXs and servos. Steve didn't you mention something about Chinese servos? How are they? I think I'm gonna order something from them real soon. Just need to come up with some "airplane money"! I have resigned myself to only buying the Berg Rxs. They are absolutely bullet proof and the price is right ($30.00). They lock on to your TXs signal and only recognize it. It does require a specific channel crystal. All for Now. Martin

I have a foam version of a BRISTOL SCOUT on my work bench. It is a very
well proportioned model and should fly better than the shorter nosed
Camels and Nieuports. In an effort to save weight I am using 3mm depron
in places where less strength is needed. The wings will probably be flat
panels.
Thse old biplanes are fun..!
