ok clue me in on how you did that pls?! I cant figure out how to post photos on here...

I had to do 2 things. One was get a screen up to type into that had a paper clip in the controls, that lets you attach a file. Second thing I had to do was make my picture files smaller. If the files are too large the program does not tell you it just don't work.

Oh yes, quick reply does not have the paper clip.

Martin-- I'm located just outside of Princeton. I'm about 5 or 6 minutes from the University. How about you?

As for the Dr 1, I have to dig it out and possibly post it here but I've found a scheme that appeals to me. If I remember correctly it's one of the yellow tailed Jastas. Can't remember which at the moment.

What Glue for Wooden Undercarriage?
 

Maybe one or more of you can help me. I'm building a model of the Sikorsky Grand, and it incorporates an undercarriage which, on the prototype, was apparently made of wood, probably oak. It consists of two parts, 3 sticks in a more or less "N" pattern under each wing, and a similar section of 6 sticks in an "WI" pattern under the fuselage. On their lower sides they attach to skids, which were originally wooden, but which I have made of aluminum.
My problem is what glue to use to glue the sticks (which are 1/8 by 1/4 inch oak) together, and to glue them to the skids.
I tried glueing the sticks with 30 minute epoxy, but they broke apart rather easily when I stressed them in tension.
Next I tried Gorilla Glue, which, subjectively, withstood more pulling that the epoxy, so those assemblies I Gorilla glued to the skids. As I was fitting one of the WI assemblies to the fuselage, one of the upper glue joints split, and then I found the sticks would pull away from the skis rather easily, also. But that was on only 1 assembly. The other three seem to be holding up better.
Length of my glue lines between sticks in about 1/4 inch.
Any suggestions as to what glue, or even to another method of building?

I "sew" the joint with thread then use CA with a kicker.

Check out Arizona aircraft models they have scale fabric in 3,4 and 5 color lozenge.

i did mine in lozenge..I recovered the aft section of the fuselage with red monokote, and then went nuts with sharpie pens..did the fuselage and wings...it actually turned out really good..I just freehanded the shapes.
I have done this ( freehand lozenge) several times on larger WW1 Fokkers, and it really gets the point across well. and the best part is it's cheap to do. It isn't difficult, and doesn't take long...couple evenings.

Was reading one of the RC magazines this weekend and there's a guy in there showing how he makes Lozenge coverings for his planes using his inkjet printer at home, just can't remember which magazine it was.

When I heard about your using markers on monokote I kinda had a lot of doubts. I had visions of "hokie" and "yuckie" ... then I looked at the thread you mentioned. WOW! its definatly RED and CAMO...lol! I REALLY like it and I admire the finished results!
I am impressed! But do you have to touch up the job? Does the marker wipe off? It seems like a lot of work! Either way, ITS COOL!

Mongo, I think that may have been Feb or March MAN. I also seem to have recently read they have downloadable scalable files so you can print your own lozenge covering if you have a color printer.

Red D.....i haven't had the marker come off yet, but then it's a little soon to tell..i am planning to put a water base varnish spray overcoat on it.
It took a little time to come up with an overcoat that has no acetone, propane or toluine in it....that stuff makes the marker run...but no touchups so far.and it's cheaper and easier than using pre printed fabric...you don't have to worry about matching up all the joins.

Thanks for the replies. Ron, I was trying to locate the #42 post but I got no luck. This thread stops at #39 or is it located on another thread?
One of the ideas that came to mind is to paint the lozenge camo on. I have an article from a plastic model mag. that has a template to make the patterns. My idea was to scan this into my computer and enlarge it (it is 1/48 scale) to match the wings. Print this on frisket paper once the appropriate holes are cut out. One issue that I see is that the lower wings are in red. Another idea was to recover the wings in one of the colors and then only use the pattern to paint on the remainder of the colors. Just thinkin' out loud on this one.

Gary: On Pages 23 and 24 in this thread you will find a how to do it for lozenge complete with photos it was done by a guy who has done lots of lozenge schemes..I've seen them up close and they look very authentic...the small Fokker D V11 is pictured on page 2 of electrifly Fokker......... The D V111 on pages 23 and 24 and a couple other pages in this thread won best of show at the last two fly ins it was at.

I found the photos. Nice work... So, do you recomend that I remove the covering and recover in one of the lighter colors of the lozenge? I was thinking about scuffing up the covering with some steel wool and then laying out the color schemes for painting. How well does that paint stick on the covering?

Gary...the tole paint sticks just fine on solartex..I used a spray varnish to seal it after it was all painted...the cowl is also done in tole paint....
freehand no masking. :eek:
I have only used oil based paints on monokote type covering...it seems to hold fairly well...the Dr1 is going into it's 7th season, and so far has not needed a paint touch up.

Oak is a high density wood, and high density wood doesn't absorb adhesives very well. Scratching or roughing up the surfaces to be glued does help. Lee W. Palm Beach.
