Default My Winter project...It's BIG!!!

hooooo boy, have I bitten off more than I can chew this time???

Where to start. A while back they announced the closing of the Full Scale Wind tunnel here at Langley. A buddy of mine has an in with those guys that ran the place and they told him to come get all this stuff they were going to throw out. There was SOOOO much stuff to grab up and I was out of pocket and unable to get over there. He gets as much as he can before it all heads for the garbage pile and boy was there some cool stuff to get.

Anyway he calls me to tell me they have this scale replica of a C-130. He knew I had the old EAM model that, by the way, finally was retired for good at the end of last season. That's another story for another day though.

So here she is... 101" wingspan. Fiberglass fuse and wing. It has speed 500 motors in the nacelles that will be replaced with brushless motors. She is not to heavy considering it was not designed to be an RC model. She was built to do scale aerodynamic testing for the C-130 and spent many a day on a pedestal serving her country.

It's not going to be easy as there is a ton of work to do but I think it is possible, and I'd like to have her done in time for SEFF.

Wish me luck!

Well for starters it has no gear. There are no control surfaces in the wings or tail except for the rudder so they will have to be cut in and hinged. I will have to guesstimate the eventual weight and decide on 4 motors, controllers and batteries.

Of she will have to have flaps and retracts so some engineering will be involved.

I have started making a checklist and I have a couple of buddies in my club that will lend their time and expertise to the project as well.

Thanks guys, looking forward to digging into her tonight and getting a game plan established.

You can't tell so much in the pictures form last night but there is a picture of a pinup model on the nose with the words "Langley Belle" written in pencil around it. I do believe I will keep that nose art theme with her.

Bill, that is almost a good a deal as the Waco.
Looking forward to this.
Might even be worth a trip to SEFF just to watch it fly.

You're right you could use some sponsorship. I know there are a lot of small grants for military history out there. Look for military historians groups at h-net.org and http://www.historians.org/affiliates...litary_his.htm for some people who can point you in a more specific direction. If you're interested let me know and I'll look into more specific grant possibilities too.

I bet if you decided to
---model it after a real AC-130 gunship that has served abroad recently(you already
did!)
---included the fact that the model is a real military artifact,
---stated that you would like to put on public showings on Armed Forces Day and
such things (which would probably be a blast for you and good for your club)
---and included info about your expertise in this hobby

that you would get a small grant and probably get some interest from cool aviation history types that could share all kinds of neat info. I picture a small booth at the next Armed Forces Day with a little info about the plane's origins and some shots of you making it into a flying model, with scheduled flights every afternoon. You'd go right after the Supercobra flyover and right before the special forces skydiver

Just an idea...

Very nice Bill! Can't wait to see this beauty in the air, especially if you get her all done up as an AC.

Now, you realize you just spent all your luck for the next year, and you won't win any neat prizes at SEFF, right?

Thanks Bud, I have all the motivation I need for this project as a very good friend of mine was a sensor operator aboard Spirit 03 that was shot down during the battle of Khafji during Gulf War 1. SSgt John Blessinger was his name and not only was he my friend, he was my next door neighbor while I was stationed in Florida at Eglin.

Yes, this bird will be branded as Spirit 03, USAF reg number 69-6567
