Default Total Newbie E-flite Apprentice

Hey guys, I just started out in the hobby & decided to pick up an Apprentice due to all the positive reviews i've read. I have a few questions, please be gentle as I said i'm a total newb at this lol!!!
Took the model out for it's maiden flight this afternoon & a few things I'm concerned with...1st, on a few occasions while doing a slow turn, naturally in beginner mode, I noticed the plane looked as if it lost radio connection & just "leveled" itself mid turn. I was flying pretty slow if this makes a difference as I read for SAFE to be active you need to be at least 20% throttle. 2nd, upon completing my flying for the day i accidentally took the wings off before disconnecting the servo wires & they "y" adapter for the ailerons came off the receiver. That was a simple fix but I also noticed a connector going to the power switch came out of the receiver & i'm not sure where it goes?
I totally appreciate all the assistance you guys may be able to provide.

Thanks so much!!!
Carmine.

Carmine,

Congratulations on your maiden flight!

The plane 'leveling' doesnt sound unusual. In beginner mode the self stabilisation is constantly trying to level the plane. The 20% throttle thing is only to activate 'SAFE', once it's activated it stays active even if you close the throttle.

The wire from the switch is the ESC (Electronic Speed controller) throttle input wire it should go to the 'Throttle' channel on the receiver.. Like this (make sure the connectors go in the correct way, orange wire facing forward):

Hey Jet!!! Thank you so much for the assistance. You really explained everything very well & I do appreciate it so much! I'm sure I'll be postino more as I move along lol!! I'm already considering swapping out the stock motor & ESC for the better "metal" cased eflite motor. I really enjoyed my 1st flight yesterday & can see myself sticking with this hobby for many years to come.

Thank you again & hope to talk to you soon my friend.
Carmine.

a little up elevator in the turns, the wings loose lift. take your time try concentric ovals then figure eights. also take offs & landing landings are only level flight very close to the ground

Can you give a few more details as to what happened? Most of the time an Apprentice with 2.4ghz doesn't just fly off. Were you able to recover the plane?

Happy flying may your crashes be limited and if they are not limited let them be cool.

Maybe whoever finds it will be able to trace it back to you via the FAA number!

:-)

What goes up, must come down. The trick is to keep it in one piece.

I'm starting to lose hope. It's been 4 days since it disappeared on me :-(. I just can't understand why failsafe didn't engage & spiral down when radio communication was lost. I had a full battery in the model & my radio batteries were brand new as well. I performed all necessary preflight tests as I did on the 2 previous flights. It was all so upsetting as the plane wasn't even that far away from me when it lost communication. I'm trying not to let this ruin my enjoyment of the hobby but unfortunately I don't have an unlimited supply of funds.

I can't help you but..... I had a Apprentice the first year they came out, flew and crashed it a lot. I use to have loss of signal problems too, never could figure it out.

How's your transmitter?

Ken

Hey Ken. As far as I can tell the transmitter is perfect. Like I said, the model was only taken out 3 times. Since you mentioned occasional signal loss, I wonder if the issue lies within the eflite receiver that ships with the plane.

Yes, I'm not gonna let this unfortunate incident stray me from enjoying the hobby further. I had loads of fun with the Apprentice so I'm definitely gonna keep my options open for something else. I was thinking about going with a BNF & possibly going for a better quality receiver/transmitter combo. I've seen lots of good reviews for the Spektrum DX6 with an Ar610. As I'm sure you guys know tons more about this than I do I'm open for suggestions.

You might want to call Horizon and tell them what happened. They might, if they're in a good mood, replace it for you.

Carmine,

Can't go wrong with the DX6. I started out with the Futaba 6EX and later went with the DX9. Have not looked back. One reason is that if you fly at club, the Spectrum nomenclature is far more common. EG. Expo on Futaba is a negative value. Channel 3 is throttle, etc. Thus, getting answers on the spot is much better.

Hope you get back on the horse soon !

Hawk

Cite a verifiable case in the last +5yrs where Horizon has replaced/refunded a fly away Apprentice by a complete newbie customer....and I'll stop chuckling......

Otherwise, the statement made above is very miss-leading and suggests an unrealistic false sense of hope......even by todays consumer friendly retail forgiveness standards......!

Geez......Even Walmart would have trouble processing this one and it's public knowledge they damn near refund everyone for everything.......lol

Hey Carmine, did you ever find your plane? I had 1 try that yesterday on me. But hit the Throttle cut switch and got it back!
